I can't take a road trip down gravel roads in a Smart Car. I guess I could, but I wouldn't look the part. So, no thanks.
My husband's jacked up Duramax isn't going to fit in any parking garage downtown STL...country boy struggles.
There are times I would love to roll up to an event in a blacked out Denali only to pretend I'm Jay-Z...I'mean why not.
There is no way I can get to Hawaii by a train...duh.
And I'm defiantly not gunna make it to any destination in a janky Dodge Caravan with bald tires that keeps dying at the four-way stop.
So here is the deal, the vehicle might just matter when it comes to reaching a destination & it could
possibly change. Like, I'll take a car to the airport then an airplane then back to a car, to only hop a ship to get to the end destination of St. Lucia.
This also matters for us working toward our goals, our students working toward mastery of standards, & ultimately their post secondary dreams. So we might spend all of this time making a beautiful hook only to lose them to to the path of starting, completing, & turning in the work. For us we might spend all this time creating a plan to eat healthy, workout, or just start something new, only to get hung up getting on the vehicle to start-dom then finding the right vehicle we need to push over the speed bumps to get to our dreams.
So maybe for some, it's having options to choose from. Maybe it's just asking the right questions to get in vehicle that is the best fit for the path that is about to be traveled. I kinda like choices and not so much someone telling my that I need to travel in a GeoMetro to go to the top of Mount Elbert. I'd probably rather hike a mountain, or take a Gondola only to ski down...just sayin'
Yes, yes, I now what you are thinking because I think it too. What about the student who is still stuck at the transportation station or the car dealership not jumping on board? Or the adult who is stuck at the depot and missed the train? Yep, for them I'm still trying to figure it out. Maybe for them it's just that somehow along the way the connection from vehicle to vehicle was missed. I do know I was once one of them & it took a "come to Jesus" moment to realize I didn't want to miss the bus to earning the degree and it took me to say enough is enough of feeling like crap for me to make a mental shift to take care of myself. Don't let your ship sink. Find your vehicle of flava to take you along your path & try your best to give choices to the kids who need the "pack your stuff it's time to go!" to get to where they want to go.
The preference to travel is different for everyone & for different destinations. Is there a perfect vehicle? Maybe, maybe not. That's probably where the scary trial & error comes in, or just vehicle preference, & it could be just picking the right connection vehicle. Just don’t try limit the vehicle choices for you or your students when it comes to chasing rainbows & shooting for the stars.

Lisa

PS. I may have gotten a little carried away with the Jack Sparrow memes. What can I say, I like his face.
